What Causes Recurring Diarrhea, Fever And Pain In Hands And Legs Of Children?

My daughter is 9 years old, she has been sick on and off for the last 3 weeks. Fever, fatigue and diarrhea. The fever is gone, the diarrhea is on and off. She is complaining that her hands, ie knuckles and her leg hurts. Her primary care doctor stated it was viral and needed to runs it coarse. I am concerned of her hand and leg pain. Any suggestions?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Welcome to health care magic,

Recurrent diarrhoea could be infective (virus, bacteria, parasite) or dysentery or or irritable bowel syndrome or drug induced etc.

Her hands and leg pain could be due to this viral infection.

She may go for routine blood count, electrolytes and stool examination with ultrasound abdomen.

Treatment is mainly depend on the underlying cause but she may require antibiotics (ofloxacin with metronidazole), prebiotics and probiotics, antispasmodics, antacids, antiinflammatories etc.

She need to consult paediatrician for further advise immediately.

Regards,
