What Causes Recurring Episodes Of Stomach Cramps, Bloating And Severe Pain?

I have had 4 attacks and finally ended up in the ER and still did not find any answers Every attack mimics the previous attacks. Here are the symptoms: Immediate onset of painful stomach cramping, bloating, stabbing pains which force me to double over in pain Profuse sweating from chest and head Nothing eases the pain but after 1-2 hours the pain begins subsiding After the stomach pain is gone then my muscles are extremely sore like I had done tons of push-ups The next day I am completely fine other than the sore stomach muscles Additional symptoms from the ER are as follows: Low BP 96/60 Elevated white blood count Bacteria in urine Swollen glands in stomach area Returned next day for bloodwork and urine test. All came back normal. At first I thought this was really bad food poisoning but the attacks occur about 1 time every two months. I first though possible gall bladder but I just don t know much about it. I will follow up with my family doctor but am just trying to find a possible direction. I m more fearful it will happen again.

Hello,

Recurrent severe stomach ache is something that needs thorough investigation as there are different causes for it. Have you done an ultrasound abdomen yet? If not I would suggest you to get it done as soon as you can. When the results come see your doctor or a gastroenterologist.

You also mentioned that there is an increase in white blood cell count which indicates infection and it needs to be treated by known underlying cause for it. There is possibility that this pain is due to gall bladder stones but there are other causes to it and a confirm diagnosis is needed. Once your doctor sees the results of USG, if needed he might advice further imaging tests or other blood tests. Once the underlying cause is confirmed, he will guide you further on the management of the issue.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Manisha Auradkar, General & Family Physician
