What Causes Recurring Fever In An Infant Despite Administering Amoxicillin?

Hi my 10 month old boy started amoxicillin for suspected ear infection at 1700 today. He has had temp of 40 degrees plus since 1600. Although between 1800-1900 it dropped to 38.5. I have given calpol every 4 hours. He still has temp 40. Last dose 2145 ans now 2245 temp now 40.6. I have him in a nappy just sleeping on me as he was rigoring earlier and I was concerned. Is this normal to not respond to calpol?
