What Causes Recurring Headache And Pain In Hip And Back During Pregnancy?

Hi. I m currently 26 weeks 2 days pregnant with my second child. I m experiencing a lot more pain than I did with my first born. I m having chronic back pain and nothing seems to help. I ve got shooting pain in my left hip that shoots all the way to my ankles when I m walking. I have migraines that never seem to go away. When I lay down to go to bed, I ll be fine for about an hour and then I ll go to roll onto my back or side and I ll have shooting pain in my pelvic area where it feels like something s gonna break or tear. My back and hip pain is so bad that it seems I have to stand in once spot to not hurt. It hurts to sit, stand, walk, and lay down. It hurts so bad that I ll just break down crying and I m losing sleep because of the pain. Its been going on for about two weeks now and I don t know what I should do about it.

Hi,

Pregnancy can cause a variety of changes in a woman's body, including hormonal changes and changes in weight distribution. These changes can lead to increased stress on the back, hips, and pelvic area, resulting in pain and discomfort. However, persistent pain and migraines may indicate an underlying issue that should be addressed by a healthcare professional.

Some potential causes of back and hip pain during pregnancy include:
* Pregnancy-related hormonal changes that cause ligaments and joints to become more relaxed and unstable, leading to increased stress on the back and hips.
* Weight gain during pregnancy, which can cause added pressure on the lower back and hips.
* Poor posture or body mechanics that can cause strain on the back.
* Sciatica, a condition that occurs when the sciatic nerve is compressed or irritated, resulting in pain in the lower back and hips that can travel down the leg.
* Pre-existing conditions, such as scoliosis or herniated discs, that may become aggravated during pregnancy.

To address your concerns, it's important to speak with your healthcare provider. They can perform a physical exam and provide recommendations for pain management and treatment options. These may include:
- Physical therapy or exercise to strengthen the muscles supporting the back and hips.
- Chiropractic care or acupuncture.
- Pain medication, such as acetaminophen, that is safe to take during pregnancy.
- Heat or cold therapy to relieve pain and reduce inflammation.
- Maternity support belts to provide additional support to the lower back and pelvis.
- Rest and relaxation techniques, such as prenatal yoga or meditation.

It's also important to ensure that your migraines are properly managed during pregnancy. Some medications commonly used to treat migraines may not be safe during pregnancy, so be sure to speak with your healthcare provider about the best treatment options.

Overall, it's important to prioritize your health and seek help when needed. Chronic pain and migraines can have a significant impact on your quality of life and may affect your pregnancy, so don't hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for guidance and support.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
