Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My 19 yr old has been complaining of heart palpitations he gets them several times a day From a sitting to a standing position or laying down position or when he is watching a tense movie
It that normal? He is physically fit and has been a healthy child At first I thought he was exaggeration but has felt the heart palpatate several times but slows down after sometime
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries
I can understand your concern. It is not common to develop palpitations at his age. Sudden onset palpitations occurring mostly while watching a tense movie or while doing any other activity can be pointing towards some anxiety disorder. I would advise you to take him to a psychiatrist for evaluation.
Hyperthyroidism may cause sudden onset palpitations in otherwise healthy males and should be kept in differential diagnosis. Low vitamin B12 levels are other reasons which can cause increased risk of palpitations. Please consult a doctor for proper evaluation and treatment and to rule out these conditions. If these medical conditions has been ruled out then anxiety is most probable cause for his symptoms. Medicines like beta blockers as Propranolol can help to reduce the heart beat and can help to reduce the symptoms of anxiety. Visit a psychiatrist for prescription of these drugs.
Thanks, Hope this helps you. Take care.
