What Causes Recurring Joint Pains, Chills And High Fever?

Since yesterday, I ve had 3 episodes of severe joint pain, chills, and high fever up to 105.8. I m currently having an episode now, Tylenol, Motrin, cold shower, frozen veggies on head and under arms, cold towels on my body. I m finally down to 101.7 , but I m afraid if I go to sleep the temp will go up and I ll end up with a fried brain. Also drinking tons of cold liquid.

Hello,

You have been suffering from recurrent episodes of joint pain, chills and high fever. Your symptoms may be indicative of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, pharyngitis, fibromyalgia, etc. You are suggested to get clinically examined by a GP, get rheumatoid factor (RF), CCP, ESR, C-Reactive Protein (CRP) and antinuclear antibody (ANA) tests , imaging tests, etc., done.

In the meantime, you can take analgesics to reduce fever. Take NSAIDs, to help reduce pain, cold compression may help. You can also spray pain relieving spray like Volini to reduce pain. Get connected to a Physical therapist, exercises help reduce joint pain. Take vitamin D rich diet like low fat milk, cereals, etc. Omega 3 fatty acids and fish oil help to reduce pain as they have anti-inflammatory effects also.

If pharyngitis or URTI is detected you will be treated with a course of oral antibiotics like amoxicillin, azithromycin, etc. Do not skip meals, stay adequately hydrated. Stay at rest, relax. Avoid addictions if any.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
