What Causes Recurring Mood Swings And Violent Behavior In A Child?

My 11 year old grandson has outbursts at school and home where he goes into a rage at someone and becomes very abusive in speech and actions. His estranged grandfather and great-grandfather were known to demonstrate such behavior and were frequently placed in the mental health ward at the local hospital for a month or so. The school psychologists have had him tested and he does not accurately fall into any of their categories. He needs a proper dx and help. Do you have any idea what this could be?
