What Causes Recurring Of Sores In My Ears?

First, I have ankylosing spondylitis and wondering if a recurring sore(s) in my ears (mostly, sometimes neck too) are related. The appearance is a red swollen area (most are pea sized) with deep puss mixed with blood. I went to a dermatologist initially and they lanced the largest sore. I have gone back 2 times since and they prescribe antibiotics again. The doctors there were confused why a normal routine of meds wouldn t work and I needed a longer/larger dose. They didn t feel this was related to any type of autoimmune disease, but it seems to relate to my AS inflammation cycles. I have now gone through 2 cycles with the ear sores but didn t go to the doctor. They swell, and eventually seep on their own, blood and puss. It is painful but eases with NSAIDs.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted your history of recurring sores in ears and neck, suffering from ankylosing spondilitis, opinion of Dermatologist, lancing the largest one and so on.
Since the distribution is limited to ears and occasionally neck there seems to be a local enhancing factor.
The most probable reason I have noticed in such patients is habit of excessive self-cleaning with ear buds or so or putting in some objects like key, pen and so on.
This gives local irritation and dermatitis with pus formation in the lesions that get small cuts as the skin of ear is firmly attached to the bone.
This can be recurrent furunculosis.
I would advise you the following in such a situation:
Stop self cleaning.
Clean the affected area with surgical spirit or liquid Povidone Iodine 2 to 4 times to avoid secondary infection.
Prevention is better than cure.
Get an opinion of an ENT Surgeon also as to see if there is any local problem that is adding to the problems.

I hope this answer helps you. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,

Dr. T Chandrakant,
