What Causes Recurring Pain In Back Of Waist Radiating Towards Spine?

Hello I have pain in my back at the waist left side that is intermittant and at times radiates toward my spine. I am comfortable standing and lying down...it I bend to the side and backward it is most noticeable. It is a burning a somewhat sharp pain. I stand at a cash register 40 hours a week...I am 66 years old. I have had this pain on and off for 2 months with no other symptoms. Since it is in the area of the kidney I am concerned.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
The pain could be from a renal stone or Urinary infection. Are you drinking enough water during your work hours. If not you might be susceptible to developing urinary stones. To check you will have to do simple urine analysis test in a laboratory. There might be evidence of stones or infection. The pain could also be from a spine condition. You could be having the early symptoms of a disc prolapse which can present with symptoms that you described. To confirm that, you will need to see an orthopedician and maybe Xray or MRI your lower spine.
For now, try to drink extra water during the day. Some small stones and infections can be flushed out of our system with just water. Alkaline citrate solution 1 tea spoon in one glass of water three times a day can help too.
Try this for 2 weeks and if your symptoms are not resolved, please consult again. Take care and good day to you.
