What Causes Recurring Painful Spasms In Upper Back?

For a few weeks I have had a stabbing pain in my back by my right rib cage. It comes on without warning. It radiates to the front. It is more like a spasm that comes on quickly and leaves within 15 seconds or less. I had an x-ray and it showed no rib fractures. Prescription Motrin 800 takes the spasm away for about 4 hours. I would like your opinion as to what it may be. Dr. ruled out gallbladder. Not with ultrasound just by an exam.

You may be having have costochondritis, which is a condition that causes the symptoms you are describing.Take Ibuprofen (Advil) tablets twice a day. Take Levocetrizine instead of Motrin 800. This will stop the flaring sensations.
