What Causes Recurring Radiating Pain From Jaw To Ear?

Woke up the night before last with pain in my left jaw area. Never had it before. I assume it is TMJ. Had intermittent radiating sharp pain in same area off and on all day yesterday. It's in the lower edge of the jaw bone/cheek, not in the joint. A tiny bit of radiating pain to left ear but not much. No dental insurance, so don't want to go to dentist if not necessary but do have appt scheduled for Thursday morning. Helped by ibuprofen.

Hi Dear,
Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern.

Thanks for your query . The pain is most probably due to clenching of teeth at night the condition is also known as bruxism . There are various reason for bruxism but the main reasons is stress (common) ,anxiety , misalignment of teeth and sleeping problems . The pain is never pinpoint it radiate to surroundings .

I would suggest you to :

- Keep your stress level low by doing exercises ,yoga or meditation , this alone can solve your entire problem.

- You can also take the help of psychiatrist .

- Continue taking ibuprofen .

- Give warm compresses to face.

- Take over the counter sleeping pills .

If problem persist for a week the you have to consult dentist and ENT specialist for proper diagnosis of condition.

Doctor may correct misalignment (if it is a problem) of your teeth by referring you to orthodontist , may prescribe muscle relaxant or give you night guard .

If there will be no dental problem then consult ENT specialist

ENT specialist may perform certain test to check ear infection (otitis media) or lymphadenopathy. Doctor may prescribe antibiotics course.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
