What Causes Recurring Seizures In An Elderly Person?

I m 60 years old...female....and had a seizure Macrch 6th . 2013. Went to the ER.....had an MRI which showed nothing wrong. Now......18 months later , same type of seizure. I was sleeping in the recliner , started shaking my arms in the air and my eyes were rolling funny....was drooling a bit as well...then went slump. No motion. The Perimedicas came and I came to....I saw everyone around me. I didn t know what had happened tho. Finally after a bit , I got up off the floor...( my frined pulled me out of the recliner).....and went about a few dailt routines. I saw my Dr. yesterday and she wants me to go get another MRI.......any thoughts ? Thank you....Val

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my clinical experience, the seizures at 60 years age may be related to various possibilities like:
- Brain tumor
- Cerebral atrophy
- Alterations in cerebro-spinal fluid pressure through arachnoid granulation changes
- Electrolyte disturbances
- Others

The MRI is ultimate strategy for finding the underlying cause of seizure after metabolic and biochemical panel has been worked out by expert neurologist. Previously normal MRI does not rule out current need of new MRI as the brain keep on changes with time so far as neuro conduction is concerned. The lesion which was seemingly during developmental phase, may be visible at this MRI time.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
