What Causes Recurring Sharp Agonizing Pain In Legs?

My leg often feels like it is being electrocuted on the outer part of my thigh area. It happens mostly when I am laying down (last night it happened AGAIN while I was sleeping, I woke up screaming), but also when I am sitting sometimes. It is a sharp, agonizing pain, but usually goes away after less than 20 seconds.
