What Causes Recurring Sharp Pain Radiating From Temple To Chin?

FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS I HAVE OCCASIONALLY EXPERIENCED A BLINDING PAIN IN MY RIGHT TEMPLE RADIATING DOWN MY FACE. IT NEVER LASTS LONGER THAN A FEW SECONDS. IN THE LAST YEAR OR SO IT HAS HAPPENED MORE OFTEN AND IS LASTING LONGER. SHOULD I BE CONCERNED ABOUT THIS?

Hi.
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain and presentation of symptoms you seems to be suffering from TRIGEMINAL NEURALGIA which is due to disorders related to Trigeminal Nerve which is a Fifth cranial nerve and supplies sensations to the face and compression or trauma to the nerve can cause episodes of electric shock like pain which can last from a few seconds to minutes even hours..
It can occur in case if the trigeminal nerve or its branches are compressed by some artery or any tumour or there is physical trauma to the nerve, nerve injury due to multiple myeloma etc..
You should consult a Neurophysician and get evaluated and an MRI SCAN can help in ruling out the exact cause of the pain..
For trigeminal neuralgia medical treatment is as follows:
-The patients can be advised to take the first line drug that is CARBAMAZAPINE [TERGETROL] which is an anti-convulsant and is helpful in relieving nerve induced pain..
-Other medications that are second line drugs like GABAPENTIN, BACLOFEN, LAMOTRIGINE etc can be given for pain relief..

In case if the pain does not improve then surgical procedures to decompress the nerve from either artery or tumour or cyst by Microvascular decompression..
Other techniques in which nerve is damaged to relieve the pain are Balloon decompression,Gama knife radiosurgery etc..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards..
