I have a small bump in the skull bone about an inch directly above the top of my ear, it is quite painful to the touch. It had appeared a few weeks ago, then disappeared for a week or so and is now back. I have no associated headaches, nausea or anything

You should take a course of antibiotics. If it doesn't respond to treatment then biopsy diagnosis is advisable. Consult your doctor and take treatment accordingly.
