What Causes Recurring Strep Throat Post Treatment?

I have gotten strep throat 3 times in the last month!!! first round of antibiotics was a mild one...I got it back 2 days after finishing it, (although, I didn t through out my tooth brush) The next time I went back to the Dr. I got a stronger anti biotic, this time got new tooth brushes, also my 2 year old got it, and we were both taking an anti biotic at the same time. So I finished that med, a day an a half ago....well bingo its back!!??

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Recurring strep throat infection occurs due to reduced antibacterial antibodies. An inefficient immune response to GAS, Group A streptococcal disease. It can also be due to presence of small germinal centers. Some people are carriers of GAS. To prevent recurrent infection you are suggested to keep your hands clean, do not share your cups and utensils with anyone.

Cover your mouth with a tissue paper when you cough or sneeze or when other people do the same so that you don't catch the infection. it is treated with penicillin based antibiotics. If a patient is allergic to penicillin, then he/she can be treated with a course of azithromycin. To reduce soreness or inflammation of the throat, analgesics should be taken. Gargle the throat with salt water 2-3 times a day.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
