What Causes Recurring Swelling And Redness On Lips?

I sometimes have swollen red lips which usually occurs after a round of golf or if I am hiking. It looks like if someone injected me with cologne on the lips. It may take 3 weeks before it disappears. I live in the dry desert of Coachella valley and do use vaseline and when exposed to the outside sun try and use a sun block. This symtom started a few years ago and it comes and goes. Not sure what causes it. I am in excellent health eating properly with home cook meals with daily exercise. Any clues is welcomed

Hi..
Thanks for the query..

As per your complain and presentation of symptoms the redness and swelling of lips seems to be more commonly due to allergic reaction to either any irritant present in air or can be due to excessive sun exposure while playing golf or hiking and the condition seems to be similar to Allergic Angioedema of lips.

Nothing to worry, consult an Allergist and get evaluated and in case of allergic reaction anti-allergic medications like Cetrizine or fexofenadine
[allegra] can be advised.
Anti-inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen can be taken.
Cold compresses over the lips has to be done.
Avoid licking, biting or sucking the lips.
While going into sun always apply a SPF 15 containing lip balm..

Hope this helps..

Thanks and regards.
