PERIODICALLY, I DO HAVE SWOLLEN ANKLES. SX STARTED A WHILE AGO WHEN I DID SOME CONSTRUCTION WORKS IN MY HOME. I NOTICED THE SWELLNG WHILE CLIMBING LADDERS AND STAIRS BUT IGNORED THE PAIN WITH THE HOPE THAT THESWELLINGS WOULD SUBSIDE. IT HAS NOW BEEN ALMOST ONE YEAR. THE SWELLING NOW APPEARS ON AND OFF. WHAT COULD POSSIBLY BE CAUSING THIS SX.?

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi,
You seem to have developed arthritis off and on after getting over exertion of joint (stress triggered). You should take rest while there is swelling. Take Ibuprofen over the counter in suitable dose advised by your doctor. While no pain, do gentle physiotherapy exercises or walking with medium speed as per physiotherapist's advice. Add vitamin D and calcium supplements to your diet. High dose vitamin C is also helpful. Avoid over exertion. Maintain healthy weight. Consult an orthopedic surgeon for repeated spurts of pain.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Vasudha Jayant Athavale, General & Family Physician
