What Causes Red And Painful Rashes Under Belly With Diabetes?

My 75 year old husband is over weight and has developed a very red and painful rash on his underbelly. He has type 2 diabetes. He experienced a very painful, and achy day yesterday. This was eventually relieved with E.S. Tylenol. Do you have any idea as to what this problem is?

Hello and Welcome to Ask a Doctor service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Perhaps he has shingles or herpes zoster. It presents as a band or stripe of red, painful rash which may become vesicular and ooze as well. Shingles is unilateral i.e only one side of the body is affected. It is due to reactivation of varicella zoster virus (VZV). Diabetes being a low immune state predisposes to reactivation. Specific treatment for shingles in the form of Oral antivirals like Valacyclovir helps shorten the episode besides also reducing the pain and severity of post herpetic neuralgia (PHN). I suggest you to kindly take him to a doctor in your vicinity for a confirmation of the diagnosis.
