What Causes Red Circle Around The Cut On Forearm?

I have a small cut on my forearm, I actually have no idea what caused it, there is about a half inch circle of red all the way around the cut and a red streak running from it to the inside of my arm. There is no pain or fever but i think this may be a sign of infection?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

if the cut is infected it will get inflamed, the color of the skin around the cut will change its color. The area surrounding the cut may start producing watery discharge or pus. Do not pop, scratch or touch it. Cuts should be cared and kept clean. You are suggested to clean the area affected with running water and antibacterial soap. After it gets dry, apply Neosporin ointment or a thin layer of Bactroban cream.

Even a minor abrasion can become seriously infected if it is not properly cleaned and cared for at the time that the cut occurred. Uncared wounds and cuts often lead to risk of developing severe infection. You are suggested to get antiseptic dressing done in ER if required. If infection is severe you will be given a course of oral antibiotics. Take care of your hygiene.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Pathologist and Microbiologist Dr. Shailja Puri's  Response
Hello,

Red circle around a cut on forearm is probably due to inflammation around the site of cut or injury. It usually disappears within few days. If the redness persists accompanied with pain and pus discharge from wound / cut, it may be indicative of infection. You need to consult your primary healthcare provider in this case.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
