What Causes Red Knots In Legs?

In the last year I have had these red knots on the lower legs (both) when the redness goes away so does the knots but it turns into bruises. When the red knots appear they are painful size of a dime to almost a quarter. What could this be? Do I have to worry about my health? I don's smoke or drink.
