What Causes Red Rashes Throughout The Body Post Intake Of Amoxicillin?

My 3 year old granddaughter was prescribed amoxicillin last Thursday for strep throat and has now developed a raised red rash on her entire body. Should we discontinue the antibiotic and give her Benadryl until her doctor comes into the office tomorrow morning or should she be seen by a doctor tonight?

Thanks for contacting HCM with your health concern

1. Since both amoxicillin and ampicillin are derived from penicillin family [to which most people are allergic/sensitive] thus YES, use of Amoxycillin is associated with rash more frequently than other drugs and developing on her entire body means she has developed allergic reaction [hives] to the same.

PS. till then you can treat the reaction with Benadryl, following age-appropriate dosing instructions.

2. Do not give another dose without first consulting/asking your doctor and go to the emergency department if she shows signs of swelling/difficult breathing.
