What Causes Red Sores On The Lips?

for over two months i have red sore lips upper & lower,,i use vasaline on them daily,,it is very hard to eat or drink, i went to my dermatologist and they did not know what the problem was & they froze it...they did the same thing 3 years ago and within 2 weeks it healed up,,now its been over a month,,still just as bad,,next step they want to do a biopsy,,but they really dont know what the problem is,,can you help,,,thanks janet

Hi..
Thanks for the query..

Red sore lips can be due to a number of causes like severe dryness and inflammation, bacterial or fungal infection, dehydration, lip sucking habit,nutritional deficiency etc..
You should start apply a mild steroid based cream over the lips in combination with an anti-bacterial and anti-fungal composition..
Do cool compresses over the lips atleast 3-4 times a day..
You can hold ice cube wrapped in a cloth over the lips or soak a wash cloth in cold water and place over the lips fr few seconds so that the heat gets absorbed and inflammation will gradually get reduced..
Start taking a multivitamin daily..
In case if there is no improvement then you can proceed for biopsy..
