What Causes Red Spot On The Base Of The Skull?

I was diagnosed Monday by an md with shingles, but my only symptom was a knot at the left base of my skull with one red spot, very painful, then I started with numbness around the knot extending out to the lateral occipital area. My question is, is this really shingles or something else I need to be worried about?

Hi,

First of all it's sad to know what you had been going through lately.

Based on the history you have shared, it can be local abcesss or cellulitis and needs a surgical review as such rash is too early to be called as shingles.

However local examination can provide a clue. Meanwhile OTC analgesics like acetaminophen or Ibuprofen can be used. If pain is severe more potent analgesics like tramadol or gabapentin may be needed.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
