What Causes Red Spots In The Mouth While Suffering From Cold?

Hello,
I took my daughter to the doctor today and he said it's a virus. She's been unwell since Friday. It's started with a temperature and a runny nose. I gave her nurofen and she was quite ok apart from runny nose na a bit of a cough. Last night she couldn't eat saying her mouth hurts. I checked her mouth and she had red spots on the top. I gave her some Panadol today but she's been complaining about her sores in her mouth. Anything else I can do to help her? Thank you.

Hi..
Thanks for the query..

Mouth sores are commonly seen when you have a viral infection and is not abnormal finding.
They will gradually get better once the infection subsides.
You can continue giving her panadol and along with it apply a thin layer of Lidocaine gel over the sores before about 15 minutes of feeding her so that the sores will get numb and there will be no burning or pain during eating..
Give her more of bland and soft meals that will be easily swallowed and she will not have pain..
Feed her with plenty of fluids and make her do warm saline gargles.
If the sores does not get better in a week then you should get a blood test and mouth swab culture done..

Hope this helps..

Regards.
