Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I was hospitalized for 3 days and had a peripheral IV. I was discharged 3days ago. Today I noticed a lump and redness distal to the IV site, also a sensation of numbness to my hand when not elevated. The lump has gotten bigger as the day has gone on. Is this thrombophlebitis, and is it unusual to develop so long after the IV was removed?
hi mam/sir,it’s not uncommon to have delayed superficial phlebitis.swelling, tenderness and redness are due to thrombus in the vein or due to inflammation, vein becomes a cord like structure.dont worry as it is completely curable.following are treatment recommendations : 1)warm compressors at the swelling site. 2)tab.ibuprofen provides pain relief.but avoid taking it if your age is>60 yrs,if you have any kidney diseases. 3)Thrombophob(benzoyl nicotinate and heparin) for topical/external application also helps in reducing the size of swelling and thus inflammation.
even if the above measures fail, you can go for a consultation for assessment of any infection, deep vein thrombus etc.hope i’m clear.any further doubts are always welcome with pleasure.please do write to us all your health concerns.wish you a happy, healthy and peaceful new year 2018.thank you.take care.bye.
