What Causes Redness And Itching In The Eye Along With Swelling?

I am experiencing redness and what I thought yesterday was a sty. However this morning my eye is more swollen and itchy. I do have some eye ointment that I picked up from the drug store. It helps with the itchiness but that s about all. Do I need to go to a Doctor and is this possibly PinkEye not a Sty?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thank you for posting your query.

It could be conjunctivitis which causes redness, itching and swelling. It could be bacterial or viral. I would suggest you to consult an ophthalmologist for local examination and for better diagnosis. It should resolve with proper antibiotics, anti inflammatory drugs. Try to keep your eye clean. Applying warmth over the area affected would also do good for reduction of swelling.
Kindly revert back to us for any further queries.

Thank you.
