What Causes Redness And Pain In Feet And Legs For Weeks?

My sister is plagued every 3-4 weeks with redness in the feet and legs, to the knees but not past. The legs and feet are warm and painful when this severe redness comes. Lasts about 6 days. When the symptons dissipate, her ankles appear smaller than before symptons begun. She has had a hysterectomy, smokes, and there is a history (sibling) of SLE. Help? Cellulitus has been ruled out.

Dermatologist 's  Response
Hi.
As per your case history your sister may be having vasculitis.
My treatment advice is -
1. Avoid standing for long periods of time and keep pillows below legs while sleeping.
2. Apply a soothing lotion like calamine lotion when lesions appear.
3. Take a NSAID like ibuprofen for 5-7 days.
4. Other treatment options are oral steroid, colchicine taken only after consulting a dermatologist.

Thanks.
Dr. Harshit bhachech.
MBBS, DDVL.
