What Causes Redness And Soreness On The Throat With Swollen Uvula?

I have a veiny throat with a swollen uvula. Was sick about a week ago for almost two weeks prior to that. A lot of nasal drip but nothing simple, it was quite an amount. Rapid response Strep test showed negative at the doctors office and the lab culture too. But this has been persistent. I am a cigarette smoker but it seems odd that my uvula has been swollen for more then a week now.

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concern.

As per your complain and presentation of symptoms you had a throat infection and the cause is Viral infection and post nasal drip is also due to it.
Swelling in uvula is caused due to inflammation as a result of infection known as UVULITIS and as you are a smoker the continuous irritation caused by the cigarette smoke, heat and chemicals is leading to persistent inflammation and swelling is not reducing..

You should quit smoking to prevent irritation in throat.
Take a short course of antibiotics like Azithromycin or Augmentin.
Take anti-inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen.
Do warm saline gargles atleast 3 to 4 times a day.
Chew one Vitamin C pellet daily.
Do steam inhalations and use a cool mist humidifier in your room as it soothe the throat.

But stopping smoking is a must.

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards..

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query redness and soreness on the throat with swollen uvula means you are suffering from Uvulitis along with Tonsillitis. It could be due to either bacterial or viral infection leading to inflammation and swelling of the tonsils and as you are a smoker it is exaggerating your condition. Need not to worry start with antibiotics like Azithromycin for 5 days. Do warm saline gargles at-least 3 to 4 times a days. Avoid hot, spicy and sharp food. Take diet rich in vitamin C. If your condition does not get resolved consult an ENT specialist and get examined and start treatment as per diagnosis. Use can go for steroidal prescribed injections. Stop smoking.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
