What Causes Redness And Swelling In Hand Despite Using Ibuprofen?
I fell while gardening this weekend. My head did not hit ground. I stopped fall with my right hand. All of my fingers and wrist are moving but the side of my hand and palm are bruised and the top of my hand is swollen. This is not much pain, ibuforen relieves it. One of my co-workers thinks I should go to urgent care because of the swelling on top of my hand which is redden. I was thinking it will heal with time. Fell on Sunday 4/16. Thoughts? I took Monday off from work. But I am working and typing today.

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi,
There is swelling & redness on hand after a Fallon right palm. As movements are not too much painful, I suspect soft tissue injury with some ligament involvement cause. In that case you may improve with home care (rest, hot / cold pack / over the counter pain medicine). Yet, as it's your right hand, I would suggest a plain X-ray of the part to exclude hair line fracture (which can lead to chronic pain & difficulty in work.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
