What Causes Redness And Swelling In The Foot Of A Leukemia Patient?

Someone I know has leukemia, WBC of 11,500 - low for him as it has been in the 60,000. Foot is swelling and red again. Last time he went to hospital and was told staph infection. This spread to both hips that had been replaced within the past couple years. Hips were drained, foot no longer swollen and red and he was sent home. What could be causing foot to swell again? He has only been out of hospital for two weeks
