What Causes Redness And Swelling In Toe?

Hi, I woke up this morning with my fourth toe on both feet very hot, red, swollen and tender. It hurts to walk but it doesn't feel broken. A few days ago I was in a situation where I had to stand in water (while wearing flip flops) for a few hours. Could this be the cause? and is it serious?
