What Causes Redness And Swelling On Lower Leg?

My 4 yr old got stung yesterday. small amount of redness to calf yesterday with some swelling. Today, the redness to calf has spread to the ankle, is more swollen, hot and red. Is this a sign of an infection or just a normal reaction to a bee sting? He has been stung before without such reaction.

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

This is likely from allergic reaction to bee sting(can happen even without previous history). Infection is less common, and will take 2-3 days to develop, sometimes with some fever.

Since the reaction is significant and progressive, I would prefer to treat with an antihistamine like hydroxyzine and anti inflammatory agent like ibuprofen. If not responding in 24-48 hours, addition of steroid also. Kindly see your doctor without delay.

Meanwhile give paracetamol for pain and keep the limb elevated.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam T. K., Pediatrician
