What Causes Redness In The Shoulder, Arms And Knees While On Niacin?

I was diagnosed with borderline high cholesterol. I went to the health food store and got some fish oil and they also gave me some niacin. When I took it, my arms, my shoulder, my knees and legs were red. I assume this is a natural reaction. I don t want to take the prescription drug because I really need to change my eating habits instead of taking medication to continue eating like I have.

hi,
thanks for putting up your query on HCM.
sir, i would appreciate the fact that you have a knowledge of niacin causing flushing is a normal reaction.
yes, niacin causes flushing due to wich you got erythema over your body.
-- sir, i would also like to tell you, that please dont take the medications, until and unless prescribed a doctor.
-- you have borderline high cholesterol, you may alter few things in your diet:
foods to be avoided such as: animal products rich in saturated fat(beef, cheese, butter), fried foods, sugars found in soft drinks, cakes; saturated oils such as coconut oil.
foods that help in lowering cholesterol:
fish oil, foods rich in antioxidants such as fruits and vegetables, food rich in omega 3 fatty acids such as olive oil; nuts like walnuts and almonds.
-- check yourself after 2-3 months and consult a doctor nearby.
wishing you good health.
thank you.
