What Causes Reduced Blood Pressure Post Flare Up Of Diverticulosis?

First time I had diverticulosis was in 2010. Second time was this past Sunday that I had a flare again. I have HB pressure and take lisinopril. After this flare my pressure is lower than usual without the medicine. My blood pressure is now 120/56 without HB pressure. Do I have to take Iron pills, my stomach don t take it well. I appreciate it. Thank you and God bless you

Good Morning!
Many patients of mine mention that their blood pressure drops after resolving an infection, which is what you get when the pockets in your bowel (diverticulosis) become inflamed and infected (diverticulitis). Once the infection clears, the client will experience a temporary normalization of blood pressure. I am not certain why this occurs and if there is a direct relationship between the two. It could be an absorption issue with your medication. For example, an inflamed intestine will not absorb blood pressure medication as well as a healthy one??

You ask if you should take iron pills. You have not provided me any information to indicate you need iron. Tell me your HB, Hct, MCV, % ferritin, total iron and I can tell you if you need iron supplements.

Thank you for writing HCM with these concerns and I hope I have cleared up some of the confusion. Healthy Regards, Kathryn Shattler, MS,RDN
