What Causes Reduced Hemoglobin Level Post A Knee Replacement Surgery?
my brother just had bil knee replacements on the 7th of this month.. afterwards he had to have 3 units of blood-- he had his hgb checked friday 21st and again today- his hgb today was lower then it was friday. it is around 8 but the CRNA says his platelets is elevated also... he has had cancer base of tongue in 2013 the CRNA is wanting him to see his cancer dr --- what are some of the things that could be causing this?
Reduced hemoglobin levels post knee replacement surgery could be due to:
1) Blood loss during surgery.
2) Since he already had cancer in the tongue, any chemotherapy or radiotherapy medications can also notoriously reduce his hemoglobin.
A complete hemogram is needed for further evaluation and his previous medical history too.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Melita Wesley,
