What Causes Reduced Menstrual Period After Taking Depo Shot?

Ive been on the depo shot for birth control, ive been on it for almost a year now and haven t really had my period since starting it. Just this week I started bleeding and getting cramps just like any regular period but a lot lighter flow then any of my old ones. I used tampons just like before but today when I took my tampon out there was a flap of skin like tissue attached to it. It looked like a small bloody piece of skin. Should I be concerned? or is it normal? I have been having unprotected sex frequently with my husband and have been doing fine by taking a pregnancy test each month as a routine to be safe.

Hi,

Depo injection for birth control consists of a single hormone Progesteron derivative. It works by avoiding ovulation for and thins up the uterine lining. This is why as a side effect there are irregular, scanty or no menstruation. When you got whatever inner lining was built up was shed off and was not with blood as process of thickening of this inner layer with blood vessels is hampered by the pill. You need not do pregnancy test each month as there is no possibility of conception, till you are under the effect of Depo shot.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
