Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Reoccurring Itchiness In The Buttock Area?
I have a reoccurring butt itch that reappears mostly in the summer. If not treated it continues to spread across my butt. I have had success with fluconazole but the problem returns. When the problem appears to go away i stop taking the medicine but should i continue for a while. Thanks .
Your symptoms are suggestive of tinea/fungal infection. The rate of recurrence of tinea infection is high even with treatment and most people notice symptoms recurring the same time every year. You can take oral fluconazole 300 mg weekly for up to 4 weeks whenever you have the symptoms.
Topical azole antifungal like Lotrimin can also be applied. Topical treatment can be continued for few months after the acute infection has subsided. This can help reduce recurrence.
Also, keep the area clean and dry. Change undergarments whenever you sweat. Wear breathable loose fitting cotton undergarments.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Lekshmi Rita Venugopal
