Retrograde ejaculation occurs when semen, which should be ejaculated via urethra, is redirected to the
urinary bladder.
Normally, the sphincter of the bladder contracts before ejaculation forcing the semen to exit via the urethra. But, when the bladder sphincter does not function properly, retrograde ejaculation occurs.
Various causes that could cause this problem include:
1. Autonomic nervous system dysfunction.
2. Trans-urethral resection of prostate.
3.
High blood pressure.
4. Benign prostate hyperplasia.
5.
Uncontrolled diabetes mellitus.
Treatment depends on the cause. Medications like antidepressants,
chlorphenamine, ephedrine and phenylephrine may work in a few cases.
