What Causes Ringing In Ear?

The last two days I have been experiencing buzzing in my right ear. This is also the side I have some blockage going on in carotid. Five years ago I had a mild stroke because the left carotid artery was almost completely blocked. I had surgery, and I have no residual effects of the stroke. I have kept an eye on the carotids with ultrasound every year. This ringing in the right ear is not constant, but comes & goes. It is a loud mechanical buzzing noise. Am I right in thinking it is probably due to the carotid blockage, or would you think it could be something more significant that needs further testing? Thank you.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As per your complain it seems that ringing in ears can occur due to causes like ear infection, perforated eardrum, excess ear wax accumulation, Eustachian tube dysfunction, Meniere's disease, TMJ disorders, Acoustic Neuroma etc.
I would suggest you to consult an Otolaryngologist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like Audiometry, x Ray can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly..

In case if there is infection you can be advised antibiotics, anti inflammatory painkiller and nasal decongestant sprays..
Antibiotic eardrops can also be advised..

In case if ringing does not resolve then you can be advised medicines like Tricyclic Anti-depressant like Amitryptiline, anti anxiety medication like Alprazolam, as well as Multivitamin supplements can be advised..
White noise devices can be advised..
You can also be advised Neuromodulation..
Avoid exposure to very loud sounds and also avoid diving, swimming etc..

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Honey Arora
