What Causes Rise In Blood Sugar Level After Suffering From Food Poisioning?

I got food poisoning a few weeks ago & had to be admitted to a hospital where I had to stay for 5 days. When the Dr. came in, he told me that my blood sugar was 129. I am not a diabetic & no family history of it in the family on either side. This was an extremely stressful time because I had just lost my job, been evicted from my apartment, had been robbed so I had no money & no where to go....could my stress have caused this?........Jodi

Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern that you are having lot of stress due to social issues.
Don't worry. Things will start settling down one by one.
Hope you have recovered completely from medical illness of food poisoning.
Regarding the blood sugar level, food poisoning will not alter its levels.
Also the value what you have indicated of 129, is not high if it is Random Blood Sugar (RBS). RBS normal upper limit is 140mg/dl.
If it is Fasting Blood Glucose (FBS), then it is slightly higer than normal. It could have been due to your stress.
If Diabetes is bothering you and you are worried about your blood glucose levels, kindly wait for about 2 to 3 weeks for your things to settle. You can get the following things tested again:
1. Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS) after an overnight fast of 8 to 10 hours. Give blood sample in the morning on empty stomach.
2. Post-prandial Blood Sugar (PPBS) - After you give sample in fasting, have regular breakfast and give another blood sample 2 hours after breakfast.
3. Get your Glycated Hemoglobin also tested when in fasting or when you give for post-prandial sample.
The results should tell you the complete picture of maintenance of your glucose homeostasis.
All the best.
