What Causes Robot Like Sound In Left Ear?

Yesterday I noticed that in my left ear I hear a robot-like sound when people talk, I talk, or if I hear something in that ear. My right ear is fine and when I put my IPod up to both ears I heard the robot sound in one ear and not the other. I was listening to my Ipod the day I noticed this but I don't think it was louder than usual. I haven't had any trauma or anything. Do you know what is and if it's serious? And also, how can I get rid of it? Will it go away at some point?
