What Causes Rumbling Sound In Eardrum While Swallowing?

Hi, I have had a very bad sinus infection for more than 3 weeks and have been taking antibiotics. I developed a bad ear infection and by ear was blocked for about 2 weeks. Now, I my ear drum makes crackling rumbling sounds when I swallow or try to blow my nose. Does this sound like a ruptured ear drum or is this normal. My ear still hurts when air hits it.

Hello,

Welcome to Health Care Magic.

Thanks for writing.

I am Dr.Saddiq ul Abidin. I have read your question completely, i understand your concern and will try to help you in best way possible.

Your symptoms are suggesting that due to long standing congestion and allergy your Eustachian tubes have been blocked.
This results in blocked sensation in ear and sometimes it can cause crackles and queer sounds often.

During swallowing there are pressure changes in the pharynx where Eustachian tubes open and as the blocked Eustachian tubes CAN NOT compensate for the pressure changes so one can listen to crackling or rumbling sounds.

I would now suggest ways to get your problem better.

1) Steam inhalation helps softening up the clogged up nose sinuses and Eustachian tubes.

2) Steam bath helps too.

3) Warm compresses on pressure areas of sinuses like cheeks forehead can help soften up the mucous.

4) You can use over the counter meds like Allegra-D for this purpose it will relieve you blockages.

5) You can use Valsalva manuever to help the Eustachian tubes open up. Do it thrice a day.

I hope this answered your question. If you have more queries I am happy to answer.Otherwise rate and close the discussion

Regrads.
