What Causes Running Nose With Green Clustering Post A Medial Maxillectomy?

I had a right medial maxillectomy on 6 April this year for the removal of an inverted papilloma. Since then I still have a runny nose with green clustering. I am douching 3 times a day and have creams for my nose. I have also had 3 lots of antibiotics. I have a smell from my nose which others can also smell and if I gently blow my nose I get a puff of air from my eye. Also three of my teeth are numb. It is now 10 weeks since my operation. Are thee symptoms likely to stop any time soon? LP I

Hello,

I can understand your concern. As inverted papilloma is removed from maxillary sinus by surgical procedure, it is possible that the lining separating the nasal cavity from maxillary sinus might have been damaged along with the branch of the facial nerve that supplies the upper teeth. In addition, maxillary sinus does open into nose, thus mucous discharges from nose in case of sinusitis.

Thus, having discharge from the nose and feelings of numbness in the teeth is understandable and possible. It will heal as the surgical site will heal. New lining between maxillary sinus and nasal cavity will form, sinusitis will resolve and the nerve supplying upper teeth will also regenerate in few months. The issues you are facing will start to decrease until they are solved.

In addition, the antibiotics will prevent any postoperative infection from setting in. You should keep follow up appointments with the surgeon to have follow up regarding the healing of the surgical site. Green discharge may indicate possible fungal infection so you should get it checked up by the surgeon.

I hope this information helps you. Thank you for choosing HCM. I wish you feel better soon.
