What Causes Scanty Menstruation?

I am 47 years old and this month have experienced light menstrual bleeding the last couple of days - more like spotting. It is dark brown. Today I also noticed an odor associated with this. Should I be concerned or is this normal premenopausal symptoms

From history it seems that this might be due to pre-menopause stage.
At this time there are hormonal disturbances causing hormonal imbalance producing more or less bleeding.
