What Causes Scratchy Throat And Bloody Mucus?

I have a scratchy throat and have had a stuffy/runny nose for most of the day. I went to blow my nose to clear it up and when I did blood came out. No mucus just blood. I checked my nose after and there were no signs of any openings or damage. Every time I clear my throat now, to spit up mucus some blood is in it. Should I be concerned or is it just a cold and the dry heat is messing with it or what? Just looking for some advice!

Hi,

Blood when blowing your nose and clearing your throat is a common occurrence when experiencing a cold. It is most likely a small burst blood vessel in your upper throat (behind your nasal cavity) which is the cause of it. It should subside in just a few days, and if it does not subside within 7-10 days, I advise you to consult your doctor.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Maria Riechel-Sarup, General & Family Physician
