What Causes Sensation Of Acrid Smell After Completing Nasal Steroid Course?
Hi, female aged 58 been having nasal steroids for bad sinus infection which seems to have cleared now. Lost my sense of taste and smell, which seemed to be coming back. Woke last night with a most unpleasant, acrid smell (like burning polystyrene) in nose which has persisted all day. Can you help please? Marilyn
Loss of small and taste indicates infection with Covid-19. This is the only infection that causes loss of smell and taste. Whenever one is recovering, these senses can be altered as seen in many patients. This has happened for the first time in history hence lots of things are yet to be understood and learnt. Additional sinusitis can alter the sense of smell.
Consult an ENT Surgeon to see the nose with endoscopy and have detailed CT scan or MRI of nose, base of skull and sinuses. This will help to know any other findings that can help in further management. It is also possible there there was really some polystyrene was burning in house or nearby, just check for this too.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
