What Causes Sensitivity To Light After Taking Fosamax?

Yesterday I started my first dose of Fosamax (Alendronate Sodium, 70 mg tab). Today my eyes are so light sensitive I am having difficulty being in the sun or even a sunny room. I have had some light sensitivity since my cataract surgery two years ago, but never this severe. Another possibility: could this drug be interacting with the statin drug I m taking? Thank you, Nanette Davis

Dear Madam, Hi & Welcome.
I can understand your concerns.
After having gone through the history given in your query, you seem to have developed the ocular (eye) side effects of Fosamax.

Fosamax (Alendronate) is generally prescribed in the treatment of osteoporosis (thinning of the bones). Apart from causing inflammation of the oesophagus and stomach acidity it is a safer medication.

As per the history given you seem to have photophobia and blurring of vision when exposed to sunlight which is suggestive of uveitis or iritis (inflammation of the iris) and keratitis (inflammation of the cornea),

You must stop taking Fosamax immediately and consult your treating physician for an alternate effective but a safer medication for osteoporosis.

As such there is no evidence of harmful interaction of Fosamax with Statin, so you may continue to take Statin for your high blood cholesterol.

Hope these answer your query.
Wishing you best of your health.
