What Causes Severe RLQ Abdominal Pain Along With Metallic Taste In Mouth?

Hi, My 19 year old daughter had severe pain in in right lower abdomen. They did a CT scan which as normal, an x ray that says non obstructive non specific bowel. The blood tests are fine but her CRP is 60. She has had this pain off and on. She says it s cramping but tender in the right lower quadrant. The doctor prescribed Miralax for a week. That has helped some but now she complains of a metallic taste. Should she have a colonoscopy? What should we do?

Hello,

I can understand your concern. Metallic taste in mouth can occur due to more than one reasons, but abdominal condition or Miralax is not responsible for its occurence. It is just a co-incidence that your daughter is experiencing it while suffering from abdominal troubles.

A very common cause of this taste is poor oral hygiene. It is possible that your daughter did not feel well for some time so she could not pay attention to adequate oral hygiene. Due to that, plaque and calculus may have accumulated in the gums causing this taste. If you visit a dentist, he/she will mechanically clean the plaque and calculus with scaling procedure and your daughter will find relief in the problem.

In addition, many medications and multivitamin supplements can also cause this problem. So if she is taking any other antibiotics or medicine, I advise you to discuss their side effects with prescribing doctor and see if metallic taste in mouth is one of them.

Also, sinusitis is responsible for this sensation in mouth. If your daughter is suffering from sinusitis currently, then this sensation can be expected till the condition is cured. One more condition is presence of cancer that can cause this problem but diagnostic tests have cleared your daughter of it so you do not need to worry about it.

Till then, she can find relief with the use of mouthwash and better oral hygiene measures. She can also suck on sugarless flavored candies.

I hope this information helps you. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic. I wish your daughter feels better soon.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
