What Causes Severe Abdominal Pain After Gallbladder Removal?

I've been having severe abdmonial pain since having my gallbladder removed last year. In between the severe attacks, I believe I'm having smaller episodes. I've had two CT scans, an Upper GI scope and no one seems to know what is going on. My labs have all been normal, the CT scans came back as normal. Do you have any suggestions? I'm female, 42, about 5'5", 213 lbs. I've lost 10 lbs in the past month due to another medication for a torn tendon.

Hi ! Good evening. I am Dr Shareef answering your query.

When all the tests mentioned by you came out to be normal, this compels me to think of possibility of coeliac disease/gluten sensitivity which goes very often unsuspected and missed, specially if you used to eat fried, oily, and fast food from outside. This is not easy to diagnose, and the best way is to exclude all kinds of fast food you consume in outside eating joints.Gluten sensitivity could give rise to all the symptoms you have described including your weight loss, abdominal pain and nausea. It is usually not thought of and is under diagnosed.

If I were your doctor,I would also get some blood tests done, like a serum amylase and serum lipase to rule out pancreatitis which is not uncommon in gall stone disease. If need be an MRI of the abdomen would be needed to rule out such associations, and the management would change accordingly.

Till all of the above were done, I would advise you with some proton pump inhibitor, a probiotic, and an anti spasmodic drug for a symptomatic relief. Some modification in your diet like more of roughage, enough liquids, avoidance of oily, fried, and fast food, and avoidance of alcoholic beverages and smoking if you do would go a long way in relieving you of your symptoms.

I hope this information would help you in discussing with your family physician/treating doctor in further management of your problem. Please do not hesitate to ask in case of any further doubts.

Thanks for choosing health care magic to clear doubts on your health problems. I wish you an early recovery. Dr Shareef.
